Technology and Cultural Trends Challenge Institutions, Educators to Adopt Engagement Learning
AUSTIN, Texas – June 19, 2014 – Phillips & Company, a global communications firm that helps clients create, defend and sustain leadership positions through public relations and market development, today announced the addition of its Education Technology & Innovation practice area focused on creating leadership positions for its clients serving education and education technology markets.
Mobile technology and new social engagement platforms are challenging educational institutions to adapt to changing expectations and new norms in learning both in K-12 education and higher learning. Investments in STEM education, and now STEAM education (STEM + Art), are also driving educators and corporate trainers to reassess the choices they have in technology and systems. As these trends shift cultural attitudes about learning and training, colleges and universities are finding it necessary to provide real-world value and experiential learning beyond the classroom.
“Technology is redefining what is possible in education and training and that is radically changing the expectations of students, educators, workers and institutions of learning,” said Rich Phillips, president of Phillips & Company. “Over the next 10 years, the classroom will evolve to support engagement learning and companies that recognize how to build brand integrity and trust with schools and educators will win market share and ultimately help reinvent education. We will continue to work with those emerging leaders that are bringing value to the educational experience.”
Phillips & Company has worked with solutions providers, nonprofit organizations and government agencies in education and technology, including LEGO™ Education, Ignite! Learning (interactive media, digital content and delivery platform provider), St. Gabriel’s Catholic School in Austin, Texas and with several NASA education programs, including the NASA Explorer Schools program, NASA Science Engineering Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) and the NASA Aerospace Education Laboratory (AEL).
The firm also worked with AVAI Systems to create and launch its OnCampus™ line of personal and enterprise mobile applications for the college campus environment. Phillips & Company’s market analysis, product and market development support and communication strategy helped AVAI enter the emerging market for vertically-integrated campus automation and security.
This year, Phillips was selected by Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) to help the agency and its 34 research centers develop business communication strategies that support and sustain the strategic leadership position of the agency.
Futuresource recently reported that the global spend on education technology within classrooms reached $13 billion last year, up 11% on 2012, and is expected to reach $19 billion by 2018. K-12 public schools are working with technology companies, including Apple, Cisco and Google, and many startups to integrate the use of technology in the classroom.
A recent study of college students conducted by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that active learning, or “engagement learning” increases test scores and decreases failing grades in undergraduate STEM courses.
“Demand for technology solutions in education continues to grow, as does the demand for STEM education programs and initiatives—despite recent cuts in some overall education budgets,” said Phillips. “Understanding how to communicate your vision and the value of your product or service to educators is essential to achieving momentum in a market that is growing and becoming more complex for decision makers to navigate.”
The Phillips leadership and education management teams include former educators and education advisors. The company provides market leadership campaigns for its education and technology clients through brand positioning, public relations, public affairs and marketing strategies.
Education Technology & Innovation is now among Phillips & Company’s six other practice area specialties, which are Space Exploration & Technology, Digital Security & Surveillance, Mobile Computing & Wireless Technology, Next-Generation Telecommunications, Homeland Security & Defense, and Energy & Green Technology.
